Watchmen star Malin Akerman will star alongside Franklyn's Ryan Philippe in new indie drama, The Bang Bang Club.

The duo will form part of a group of combat photographers in South Africa who became renowned for capturing the violence that took place in the country during the last days of Apartheid.

The photographers in question were Kevin Carter, Ken Oosterbroek, Greg Marinovich and Joao Silva and only two are still alive today. Oosterbroek was killed by friendly fire in 1994, while Carter - who received the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography - committed suicide in July of that same year.

According to Empire Online, Akerman is poised to play a photo editor who dealt with the foursome, while Philippe plays Marinovich. Taylor Kitsch, soon to be seen as Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, has also joined the cast as Carter.

The Bang Bang Club is written and directed by Steven Silver, a documentary filmmaker from South Africa, and filming is due to start next month in and around Johannesburg.
