"Some people think I'm bonkers," yelps Dizzee Rascal, repeatedly, on new single 'Bonkers'. It's true, Dizz, but can you blame them? You have, after all, abandoned the gritty, street-level grime that earned you the Mercury Prize in 2003, opting instead for a series of less-than-edgy collaborations. First it was 'Dance Wiv Me' with "Dr Disco" Calvin Harris, and now you're hitting house in this joint effort with Armand Van Helden. If not bonkers, then suffering from a musical multiple personality disorder, at least.
But there is a common theme - both tracks are absolute bangers. And, just as the Harris-embellished track blazed up the charts, 'Bonkers' seems destined for humungous things. The ribcage-shaking bassline and unending onslaught of synths and bleeps offer a thrilling contrast to Dizzee's simple but distinctive rhymes, and the galloping pace only slackens momentarily for a couple of slightly naff ambient breaks. But, on a dancefloor, you'll definitely need 'em.
