Michael Eavis won't retire until 2021

Michael Eavis has hit out at reports that he's planning to step away from the legendary festival in a couple of years.

Earlier this week, various news sources claimed that the dairy farmer would be handing the organisational duties over to daughter Emily in 2011, but he insists the rumours are false.

Michael told BBC 6 Music: "It's rubbish, that story.

"I said I'll be finishing in 2021. So I'll be 81 by then."

Regarding Emily's increasing involvement in the four-day festival, he explained: "She's doing a little bit more all the time, which is very good. It's a very gradual process but that's been going on since she was 12. Now she's 29, so in another 10 years she'll be perfect."

More than 60,000 revellers had descended on the Somerset farm by last night (24 June), with an additional 80,000 expected to arrive today as the sold-out shindig officially begins. And Michael reckons the festival may have to expand in 2010 to meet the needs of the eager early birds.

He added: "People are coming earlier so next year we'll have to start on Tuesday and people will get an extra day for nothing.

"The problems with the traffic around Somerset were horrendous this year so we do need to start earlier to even it out a bit. And that means there will have to be a bit more entertainment."
