Anuvahood star Adam Deacon is this year's Orange Wednesday Rising Star Award winner, after beating off stiff competition to win the coveted gong.

The result of the public poll was announced at the BAFTAs ceremony at London's Royal Opera House this evening.

A visibly shocked Deacon said: "This is surreal. Thank you to everyone out there. Thank you to BAFTA for this, because for me it means acceptance, so it's not just a win for me; it's a win for the underdog and everybody out there with a dream to better themselves."

Born and raised in Hackney, East London, Adam rose to fame after starring in 2006 film Kidulthood and has been playing urban and streetwise characters since the age of 12. He reprised the role of Jay in Adulthood, the sequel to Kidulthood, as well as starring in crime thriller 4.3.2.1. In 2012, he is due to appear in three films; Outside Bet (alongside Bob Hoskins), thriller Payback Season and Menhaj Huda's Comedown.

Spencer McHugh, Director of Brand at Orange, said: "We're thrilled that the British public has chosen Adam as their winner. The build-up to the award has been one of our most exciting yet and the passionate support for the nominees from their fans on Twitter and Facebook has demonstrated this truly is the public's award. We'd like to congratulate Adam and hope this marks the start of a new exciting chapter in his career."
