Duncan Jones to direct World of Warcraft film

World of Warcraft

British filmmaker Duncan Jones has signed up to bring World of Warcraft to the big screen.

A film based on the hugely successful Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game (MMORPG) has been development for several years, with Spider-Man helmer Sam Raimi intitially set to direct before bowing out.

Now Jones, who received critical acclaim for his low-budget debut Moon, has been handed the keys to a blockbuster fantasy with a rumoured $100m budget, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"The gauntlet was thrown down ages ago," Jones said on Twitter.

"Can you make a proper MOVIE of a video game. I've always said it's possible. Got to DO it now! ;)"

Jones, son of David Bowie, also directed Jake Gyllenhaal thriller Source Code and had been linked with the Dredd directing role.

Warcraft will be produced by Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni for Legendary along with Blizzard and Atlas Entertainment's Charles Roven and Alex Gartner, with a 2015 release planned.
