Reports of Emma Watson landing the lead role in the planned 50 Shades of Grey film have been rubbished by the movie's producers.

The Harry Potter star had been linked with the part of Anastasia Steele, a young college graduate who begins a steamy relationship with a wealthy businessman.

Taking the role would be a huge step for Watson, and it's unlikely that her millions of fans from the Harry Potter franchise would approve of her starring in a film about a sadomasochistic love affair.

However, the producers of the upcoming movie of EL James' bestselling novel have insistsed any casting speculation is mere conjecture.

Dana Brunetti tweeted: "All of the rumors on #FiftyShades are just that - rumors. No one has been cast in any role. We have to get a writer and director first."

American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis continues to tweet about his interest in writing the screenplay for Fifty Shades of Grey, while actors linked with the lead roles include Ryan Gosling, Ian Somerhalder, Kristen Stewart and Elizabeth Olsen.
