Jodie Foster took the Cecil B DeMille award for lifetime achievement and addressed her sexuality publicly for the first time, saying she had come out as gay to "trusted friends and family" and "gradually, proudly" to everyone she met.

She added: "But now I'm told, apparently that every celebrity is expected to honour the details of their private life with a press conference, a fragrance and a prime-time reality show."
