Naomi Watts to play Princess Diana
Australian actress Naomi Watts has been cast as Princess Diana in a new biopic, it has emerged.
The Help star Jessica Chastain had originally been linked to the role in Oliver Hirschbiegel's Caught in Flight but now Mulholland Drive actress Watts will play the late royal.
Set to begin production in the UK later this year, Caught in Flight reportedly depicts "the last two years of the Princess' life and charts how finding true personal happiness for the first time allowed her to evolve into a major international campaigner and humanitarian".
Watts said of her casting, "It is such an honour to be able to play this iconic role - Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on-screen."
Hirschbiegel added: "I am delighted to have such a truly exceptional actress who embodies the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana."
