Oscars 2013: Academy Award nominations revealed

The nominations for the 85th Academy Awards have been announced and the Best Film Oscar will be contested by Beasts of the Southern Wild, Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Amour, Django Unchained and Argo.

The Best Actor Oscar will be contested by Daniel Day-Lewis, Denzel Washington, Hugh Jackman, Bradley Cooper and Joaquin Phoenix, while the Best Actress nominees are Naomi Watts, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Emmanuelle Riva and nine-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis.


Lincoln leads the field with 12 nominations, with 11 for Life of Pi, eight each for Les Miserables and Silver Linings Playbook, and seven for Argo.

Skyfall joins Amour, Django Unchained and Zero Dark Thirty in scoring five nominations.

David O Russell is nominated for Best Director alongside Ang Lee, Steven Spielberg, Michael Haneke and Benh Zeitlin, with Les Miserables director Tom Hooper a notable omission.

Meanwhile, Adele is nominated in the Best Original Song category for her theme song for box office smash Skyfall, and Silver Linings Playbook becomes the first film to be nominated in all four acting categories since 1981's Red.

The nominations were announced by Family Guy creator Seth Macfarlane and Gangster Squad actress Emma Stone.

The annual Academy Awards take place on February 24th at Los Angeles' Kodak Theatre.
