Paul Giamatti in talks for Rhino role

The Rhino

Oscar-nominated actor Paul Giamatti is in negotiations to play The Rhino in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it has been reported.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Rock of Ages star is in negotiations to play a character based on Marvel Comics' Aleksei Sytsevich, a former Soviet brute who has super-strength and suit thanks to a powerful polymer suit.

Giamatti had expressed interest in the character in 2011, telling Showbiz Spy: "I thought Rhino was the greatest thing when I was a little kid. It was a guy who was basically in this rhinoceros outfit, and I always thought, 'Why don't they have The Rhino in one of their movies.'

"But maybe The Rhino wasn't that big of a deal for anybody but me... If they ever go with The Rhino, I would be ready and waiting."

He also told talkshow host Conan O'Brien: "The Rhino was fantastic. He was, like, a Russian guy. He was real fast, and he hit stuff real hard."

It has also been reported that British actress Felicity Jones is negotiating for an as-yet unspecified role.

She and Giamatti would join Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, Jamie Foxx's villain Electro, Shailene Woodley is Mary Jane Watson, and Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborne.
