Philip Seymour Hoffman will play gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, it has been announced.

The Moneyball star was linked with the part last month and now Lionsgate has confirmed his casting in the second film based on Suzanne Collins' bestselling novels.

A press release from the studio explained that the character "is appointed Head Gamemaker for The Hunger Games following Seneca Crane".

Oscar-winner Hoffman recently completed a Broadway run of Death of a Salesman and will be seen in Paul Thomas Anderson's eagerly-awaited drama The Master before appearing in Catching Fire.

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Miley Cyrus' new fiance Liam Hemsworth will reprise their leading characters in the sequel to the record-breaking The Hunger Games, which will be directed by Francis Lawrence.
