See Tom Hanks in trailer for Captain Phillips

Captain Phillips

The first trailer for action-thriller Captain Philips has been released online.

The film depicts the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.

The film stars two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks as Captain Philips and is directed by Oscar nominee Paul Greengrass, from a screenplay by Billy Ray and based upon the book, A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea, by Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty.

The very promising trailer indicates that the film will feature the high-octane realism featured in Greengrass's Jason Bourne films. A heart-pounding boat invasion sequence is followed by a tense showdown between Captain Philips and the leader of the pirates.

Captain Phillips docks in UK cinemas on October 11, 2013.
