Tom Hardy could play climber George Mallory in a new film about the mountaineer's attempts to climb Mount Everest.

According to Deadline.com, the Lawless star is in early negotiations with Sony Pictures to take the lead role in Everest, a Doug Liman drama which would likely begin production next spring.

Mallory tried three times in the 1920s to scale the Himalayan peak, failing fatally on his third expedition in 1924.

Mallory's body was discovered in 1999, while the remains of climbing partner Sandy Irvine have never been found - some still believe the pair's ascent was successful, but Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay are officially recorded as the first men to scale Everest, after their successful 1953 attempt.

Deadline reports The Bourne Identity director Liman would helm Everest after completing work on Tom Cruise thriller All You Need is Kill.

Hardy, recently seen in The Dark Knight Rises and Lawless, will next star in Mad Max: Fury Road.
