Cause of Bowyer v Dyer punch-up

The story goes that Lee Bowyer lashed out at Kieron Dyer for failing to pass the ball to him. Aston Villa had just gone 3-0 up at St James' Park, which might explain why Bowyer was so miffed. Gareth Barry, who scored two penalties in the game on 2 April 2005, helped to haul Bowyer away from Dyer in the fracas which followed. The final score was 3-0 to Villa. Bowyer and Dyer were sent off, although Newcastle placed the blame firmly on Bowyer's shoulders, fining him six weeks' wages. Both players were banned for the mandatory three games, but the FA imposed an additional three-match ban on Bowyer and fined him 30,000.
