Second tier winners of FA Cup
It was West Brom, who were in the old Second Division when they beat top-flight Birmingham 2-1 in the 1931 FA Cup final. Albion faced only one First Division team (Portsmouth) on their way to Wembley, overcoming Charlton, Tottenham, Wolves and Everton, as well as Pompey. In the week after the final West Brom beat Stoke and Charlton to clinch promotion to the First Division. They remain the only side ever to have achieved the 'double' of winning the FA Cup and promotion to the top flight in the same season. Both West Brom's goals were scored by W G Richards, who later in 1931 scored four goals in five minutes against West Ham.
