'Heavy Cross', the first single to be taken from Gossip's forthcoming album Music For Men, has been eagerly awaited by many, not least because it reveals just how the Arkansas three-piece intend to follow up the phenomenal success of 'Standing In The Way Of Control'.

The secret, it seems, is to write 'Standing In The Way Of Control' Part Deux - such is the ease of comparison between 'Heavy Cross' and their 2006 mega-hit. But if that sounds like a pop at Beth Ditto and co's versatility, think again; it's just that their unmistakable blend of sustainless guitar clatters over hi-hat-heavy beats still sounds as urgent and fresh as it did three years ago. It obviously helps that über-producer Rick Rubin was at the helm throughout recording.

Beth Ditto's soul-inspired vocals are still unmatched in the indie sphere, and 'Heavy Cross' proves beyond any reasonable doubt that Gossip are anything but one-hit wonders. Music For Men, released on 22 June, is an exciting prospect.
