Katy Perry has revealed she will make a guest appearance as a judge on American Idol.

A vacancy opened up on the panel after Paula Abdul quit the US equivalent of The X Factor last month over stalled contractual negotiations.

When quizzed about whether she's looking forward to working with Simon Cowell, Katy said she will relish the chance to give up-and-coming singers the benefit of her experience, but wouldn't be as much of "an a**hole" about it as the notoriously blunt music mogul.

She told Eonline.com: "I might become a little bit of a buddy with Simon, because whenever I watch that show, as much as he's an a**hole, he's a very truthful, honest a**hole.

"I don't want to break [the contestants], but how many of us know that one person that has been trying and trying - doing karaoke and little gigs here and there at, like, an open mic [night] - and nobody has told them they can't sing in pitch."

She added: "I might be that gal to tell you the truth."
