22 Jump St Soars To Top Of UK Box Office

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill's 22 Jump Street has seen the highest opening weekend of any comedy released this year.

The film, about two police officers who go undercover to find a college drug dealer, took £4.85m.

It beat Angelina Jolie's Maleficent into second place and Tom Cruise's Edge Of Tomorrow into third.

The original film, 21 Jump Street, opened to £1.56m in 2012 and went on to gross more than £10m.

22 Jump Street is released in the US on June 13.

In the US, a love story about teenagers who meet at a cancer support group has soared to the top of the box office.

The Fault In Our Stars, based on a popular young adult novel by John Green, took $48.2m (£28.6m) in its opening weekend.

It stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as the two lead characters in the tear-jerker whose arrival on the big screen has been hotly anticipated.

The film also has pushed Maleficent down to the number two slot and the Edge Of Tomorrow to number three.

The Fault In Our Stars opens in the UK on June 20.
