Maryland Mall Shooting: Three People Killed
Three people have died and five others were wounded in a shooting inside a suburban Maryland shopping mall.
Howard County Police Chief Bill McMahon said officers found the trio, including the suspected gunman, dead at the scene.
He said the gunman was "located near a gun and ammunition" when officers arrived. A motive for the shooting remains unclear.
Police named the two retail employees killed as 21-year-old Brianna Benlolo and 25-year-old Tyler Johnson.
Both worked at Zumiez, which sells skate clothing and accessories.
The gunman has not yet been identified.
Police say the attack took place outside Zumiez on the upper level of the Mall in Columbia, a suburb of both Baltimore and Washington.
Chief McMahon said authorities ran into difficulty in identifying the gunman because of concerns that he might be carrying explosives.
He said Swat teams were clearing the shopping centre, but investigators did not believe anyone else was involved and the building was secure.
Witnesses said they heard a succession of gunshots inside the mall.
Joan Harding said she was shopping with her husband when they heard something heavy falling, followed by gunshots and people running.
"My husband said, 'Get down!' and the girl that worked in the store said, 'Get in the back,'" Mrs Harding said.
She said they hid there until police gave the all-clear.
Laura McKinzles, who works at a kiosk in the mall, said she heard between eight and 10 gunshots, followed by people running and screaming.
She ran into the backroom of a perfume store and locked the door.
