The all clear has been given at Fort Lee Army base in central Virginia after a shooter was reported there.
The base had been put in lockdown amid reports of an "active shooter", with police cars rushing to the scene.
The Pentagon said the shooter was a female, she was injured and was the only casualty.
The base is about 25 miles (40km) south of Richmond and 100 miles (160km) south of Washington.
The four-storey building involved in the incident is the headquarters building for the base.
It houses the Combined Arms Support Command.
According to the military's website, Fort Lee is the third-largest training site in the Army, with a daily population of about 34,000, including members from all branches, their families, civilians and contractors.
