Police Chase Hijacked Ambulance After Man Flees

An ambulance worker having a nap in the back of his vehicle woke up to find himself the victim of a hijacking, authorities have revealed.

Police say the staff member was able to jump out the back of the ambulance, which had been parked outside Lovelace Medical Centre in downtown Albuquerque, as it slowed at a junction.

Officers then gave chase and eventually managed to bring the stolen vehicle to a halt by using spikes to puncture its tyres.

A man and woman have been arrested in connection with the taking of the vehicle at around 3am on Saturday.

Police spokesman Elder Guevara confirmed the employee had been asleep in the back of the vehicle, but had managed to escape.

The ambulance was pursued as it headed eastbound, and then westbound, on Interstate 40, where officers managed to stop the vehicle.

Police have not released the names of the suspects or the victim, who was uninjured.
