'Appalling' Attack: Burglars Water-Board Gran
A grandmother who had boiling water poured on her and was water-boarded by two masked burglars has described the torture as "sheer hell".
Francoise Jansen, 73, said she feared she was going to die after raiders forced their way into her six-bedroom home in Surrey and carried out the attack which police called "appalling" and "horrendous".
Mrs Jansen, who was alone in the house, was forced to open a safe before the men helped themselves to a haul of expensive jewellery and personal items worth a reported £150,000.
Describing the horrific experience, she said: "They asked me if I had any grandchildren, I told them I had 10 and they said, 'We are going to kill you, do you think your grandchildren will miss you?'
"I was consumed by fear. It was sheer hell and all I can remember is praying."
The pensioner said she tried to press a panic button installed in her bedroom, prompting the burglars to boil a kettle and pour scalding water over her arm as punishment.
The criminals, dressed in black clothes and balaclavas, also threatened to cut her fingers off as they held her captive for several hours in the house on a private estate in St George's Hill, Weybridge.
She was gagged, water-boarded and tied to a radiator during the serious assault that left her with multiple injuries.
Mrs Jansen was ordered to open a second safe but was unable to perform the combination. As a result, the burglars, who entered the property around 10.50pm last Friday, tied her hands behind her back.
Then they made her lie in her bath where a water-drenched towel was wrapped around her face a number of times to simulate drowning.
Mrs Jansen said: "Then they tied me to the towel rail with cable they had ripped from a nearby radio, they cut off my trousers and T-shirt with scissors. I was trembling because I thought they were going to rape me and I just kept praying."
She also told the Daily Mail: "I was semi-conscious but eventually I realised they were gone and I had to bite myself out of the wires to get free."
The pensioner managed to raise the alarm but police were unable to locate the men - who are believed to have escaped and headed towards Brooklands Road on foot - following a search of the area.
Detective Inspector Jake Nuttall, who is leading the investigation, said: "This was an appalling, unprovoked attack on a defenceless, elderly woman in her own home and Surrey Police is carrying out a thorough and extensive investigation to bring these cowardly offenders to justice."
Officers have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information about the incident to come forward. Anyone who witnessed the burglary or has any information should call Surrey Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
what do you think?

shirley sutton
And where do they learn to do this? Step by step instructions in the press who glorify violence and give far too much info

Dave Harrison
Shirley. You are assuming that they can read

Julie Crumpton
Lol, dave!

Chris Ward
Yes I'm sure they would never have done this had they not read such an article !! (please read in the sarcastic tone intended).

Julie Crumpton
They won't get what they truly deserve even if they are caught, these attacks on the elderly are happening over and over, ....and all the police can say, is they are doing all they can to bring them to justice......what justice!? It's not the polices fault, they can only do what they can do, ......but for heavens sake, this government needs to wake up and change the pathetic punishments handed out to these sc.m bags! Brave lady, hope she makes a full recovery from this horrendous ordeal, makes my blood boil!

Jasmin Louise
Hi Julie, I'm pleased you said it's not the polices fault!. I know we're fed up of seeing the same faces appear in court time and time again! Only to get laughed at when they get a slap on the wrist! They know the system too well. Hope this lady makes a full recovery too.

Julie Crumpton
I really believe its not the polices fault, I can imagine the frustration of pulling someone in for a crime, only to as you say, get a slap on the wrist! What are the police expected to do? If they are threatened, retaliation is seen as wrong, after all.....the sc.m bags have their rights! I don't know how this government, or whoever is responsible for setting punishments, can sleep at nights! When are they going to ope their eyes and SEE what's happening, are they really that blinkered? Punishments HAVE to fit the crimes, as it stands, wouldbe

Julie Crumpton
..criminals know the system, as you say, and there's no deterrant! How frightening is that? ....ask mrs Jansen!

Jasmin Louise
Very true, I also think judges need a greater power to impose tougher sentences without government interference. Maybe some in authorities should spend a few shifts with officers for a better understanding of what we deal with?

Police spending all their time tracking people who leave comments on twitter etc instead of going after real criminals

Dave Harrison
Shirley. Too true and of course wasting thousands of pounds chasing people who hack into voicemails. But who is it that demands they waste their time in such a way ?

Julie Crumpton
The police have their hands tied by what they are told to do, dave, good point! Hacking is a crime, and if the police are told " go investigate" what are they supposed to do? Say, " do you know what, sir, I'd rather go and catch murderers and the like!" of course they can't! Look to the " higher ups" to apportion the blame!

Dave Harrison
Julie. A cousin of mine is in Northumbria police and has about 18 months left to do. He can't get out soon enough. He has no problem with the criminals but is fed up with targetting politically expedient crime to ensure the chief constable will get his OBE

Julie Crumpton
This is it, dave, the great "general public" have a go at the police, they are in public view, it's not their fault! You see on crime program's on tv, often the public will say, " why don't you go catch real criminals!" they would love to, .....but they have to do what they are instructed to do, they are victims in their own way too! As you said, dave, your cousin cannot get out quick enough, that's really sad, but I understand the reasens!

Interesting that the comments about punishment to fit the crime are coming mainly from the female sector, pretty sure that if more women were in positions of power there would be proper justice handed out! Punishment before rehabilitation, and no remission, make damn sure they never want to return to jail, better still - exterminate them!

Dave Harrison
Forget all the usual expressions of outrage etc, that goes without saying. What really concerns me is that there are a growing number people in this country who care so little about others that they are prepared to subject another person to such an ordeal in the pursuit of money. What sort of generation have we brought up? Where are their standards & values ? This pair are someones son or brother and there may be more like them at home. Doesn't bear thinking about

Jasmin Louise
Once again, I'm in totally agreement with you.

Dave Harrison
My, My, one negative. So there is someone out there who thinks what these two did to this old woman is perfectly acceptable. I think that makes my point for me.

Andy Sunderland
Disgusting crime but not shocking soft sentences continually handed out bet they had loads of previous convictions but some idiot in a suit said let them out early because they've changed , Hope the poor lady makes a full recovery .

Russell Beaumont
I genuinly feel sorry for that unfortunate lady I hope her attackers rot in hell along with the hospital workers who systematically purposefully starve and deny food and water to elderly patients I call it premeditated murder one thats supposed to carry the heaviest punishment.

When are police going to start catching real criminals like these b......ds instead of spending time tracking down people who leave comments on twitter and the like - need to get priorities right

Dave Harrison
All done at the behest of politicians looking to show how tough they are on alleged hate crime

Lorgar Aurelian
It's easier to track thought crime than real crime. Get these coppers off their computers and on the streets like we pay them to do.

Russell Beaumont
Good comment Shirley I cant understand why you didn't score more positive. The reason police have their priorities wrong is because they are controlled by poitically correct commissarrs ie social services until they are allowed to manage themselves we will see no change whatsoever.

Christopher Hodson
They would have to go on courses to learn how to catch real criminals due to lack of practical experience

John Byrne
How can people have so little compassion that they can do this to a another person let alone an elderly lady. I know if I had done something like that the last thing id want would be my dad to get hold of me. Respect needs to be instilled into these people.

Dave Harrison
John. The only people that these dregs respect are the likes of John Duggan. Remember the fallen soldier tribute. Unbelievable

Rhys Sage
In the US it is often said that when seconds count the police are only minutes away. Everybody I know has a gun hidden away in most rooms of their house. I do too. The only question is whether a burglar will get fed a diet of 9mm or .357 Magnum.

This was a well planned attack by people who obviously had been casing the house for some time - i would have thought on an estate like this they would have been spotted in the weeks leading up to it. Sounds like she has great neighbours...

john lonsdale
Would not surprise me if the robbers have a drug addiction. And whats going to happen to them when they get caught and convicted.

They should be stripped and horse whipped in the town centre when caught..............

Rhys Sage
They will get the maximum for burglary and assault so they should be out in 3 months - if they get caught.

Richard Crowther
I know it's the wrong thing to write but I hope vigilantes get these "f b's" and give like for like plus before handing them over to the authorities...dead or alive...doesn't really matter which, because they won't last long inside.

Roger Caldwell
Probably will claim in court that they didn't really want to do it but they had too for survival as they have come from a poor background and had a terrible relationship with their family and the courts will look sympathetically at their case and give them their punishment - a community sentence!!
