Asteroid To Pass Earth In Record Near Miss

A 40m-long chunk of rock hurtling through space will pass closer to the Earth than any other near miss on record, Nasa is expected to say.

Scientists at the space agency are expected to reveal the reassuring news for Earthlings at a news conference on Thursday.

Their calculations predict Asteroid 2012 DA14 will whistle past Earth on February 15 closer than the orbit of some weather and communications satellites, speeding by at a distance of 17,000 miles (27,400km).

That would be the planet's closest shave with an identified flying object since records began.

Asteroids and meteorites that have come closer than that have ended up colliding with the planet but this one is not thought to be a danger to either us or satellites.

It was discovered by a Spanish dentist turned amateur asteroid spotter. He is part of a team of enthusiasts who in turn are part of an army of asteroid watchers vital to Nasa's early warning system.

Former space shuttle astronaut Tom Jones told Sky News there are thought to be a million asteroids out there as big as 2012 DA14.

They are called 'city killers' because they would be able to wipe out a metropolitan area should they hit the planet. Nasa is thought to have tabs on only 1% of them.

One struck a remote part of Russia in 1908 and flattened vast areas of forest in what became known as the Tunguska incident.

There are believed to be around 100 'planet killers', of which Nasa has observed approximately 90%.

A 'planet killer' is widely believed to have wiped out the dinosaurs.

what do you think?

And yet we dont have anyway of dealing with earth bound asteroids. We'd sooner worry about the global economy instead of global extinction. Perhaps we need a direct hit to wake everyone up to the bigger picture

I didnt mean from a global killer, i was refering to a city killer. But not in a populated area, somewhere remote but where it could be witnessed so that the space guard initiative would actually be taken seriously instead of using dentists with a telescope to spot threats. And besides it would take a direct hit from something exceptionally big about the size of a small planet to wipe out ALL life on earth. Not even the asteroid that put an end to the dinosaurs could pull that off....duh!

It comes to something that we are relying on people like a dentist to spot such near misses.anyway i guess our planned shopping trip on saturday is still on, i thought this might be an excuse to get out of it.i tend to become a donkey on such trips.

We have found only 1% of asteroids is the solar system and beyond. Who do you expect to spot the rest? Amateur astronomers spot all kinds of objects including exoplanets. What's wrong with helping NASA? You'd have far more to complain about if we didn't spot any at all.

Maybe the Killer Solar Flare on another orange news story today will take care of this? Its a happy day for news today isnt it? Death by killer asteroid or death by solar flare? Nice

I do hope it doesn't hit the Houses Of Parliament, where would we be if our dear leaders were flattened? "Nurse, nurse, it is time for my medication".

I like that film but it is littered with so many inaccuracies it's untrue. The part where they're on the asteroid should be in total silence. Remember; in space, no-one can hear you scream.

So far, so WRONG! They've been calculating such things for my entire life. Admittedly, some junk from space has "possibly" passed through the atmosphere and there might be even some chance it wasn't all made by humans. As soon as I loaded this page, my initial thoughts were, "1. Another news story about ROCKS is likely to be nothing much happening. 2. The angle of the asteroid pointing towards the neighbours' rocky garden implies, I might as well not bother watching the video 'cause no asteroid is going anywhere near Earth, lately. 3. The colour of the Earth in the video image seems about as cyan as all the results I find using any search engine online." There is no asteroid, it's going nowhere near Earth, most of the stars people are looking at lately, are probably artificial, big pieces of metal reflecting light back from space which is why they make such STUPID patterns in space! So, what is the video going to be? Another BEARDED "scientist", so they call themselves?

As soon as I saw the "scientist's" shirt I knew there was no asteroid. It's about as real as 21 fragments of comet Shoemaker-Levy having hit Jupiter. That was probably all fictiscious and painted by Hollywood artists.

Interesting theory there Adrian. If im reading it right you suggest that the constalations are man made. If what you are saying is true, man began exploring space thousands of years ago seeing as one of the most well known 'STUPID pattern' in the northern hemisphere, the constalation of Orion is also the influence of the alignment of the pyramids built by the ancient egyptians and space exploration by man would have to pre-date them.

What I'm saying is, in recent times, people have been sticking metallic garbage in space to reflect light and make stupid patterns like everything on the internet pointing in that direction ///////////. Take a look for yourself when the clouds disappear.
