Atlanta: Child Shot In Head At School

A suspect is in custody after a student was shot in the back of the neck at a middle school in Atlanta.

The 14-year-old male victim was reportedly "alert, conscious and breathing" when taken to hospital for treatment. Police said his injuries are not life-threatening.

One person - a male student - has been arrested after the shooting, which happened just outside the school building.

A teacher also suffered minor cuts and bruises and was treated at the scene, according to Atlanta Fire Captain Marian McDaniel.

Atlanta Public Schools officials confirmed that there had been a shooting at Price Middle School.

The school has metal detectors at its entrances and officials said they were not sure how a gun could have come onto the campus.

Atlanta Police Chief George Turner said an armed police officer working at the school disarmed the suspect moments after the shooting.

A teacher also sustained minor cuts in the shooting's aftermath but was not hit by gunfire, Chief Turner said.

The school was reportedly put on lockdown.

The shooting is the latest to occur as the United States wrestles with gun violence, most recently a massacre that left 20 children and six adults dead at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Connecticut in December.

what do you think?

I agree with Diane they seem to think the answer lies in buying more guns - but does seem there's more shootings or they're making the news here more often

Statistics mean nothing. 10% of those traffic deaths could be the result of drink driving. That would suggest 90% are the result of sober drivers. Drunk drivers safer than sober drivers. It's easy to use statistics to support a point of view, but just as easy to pick holes in the same.

American deaths in Afghanistan about 2,000? Looking at the numbers, Americans seem to kill far more of themselves with guns than their War-on-Terror enemy do?

agree with Vlad. the majority of americans travel by car or bus every day. if the same number walked around shooting randomly on a daily basis, the comparison would be valid. actually the 3/1 ratio is interesting; what is it for the UK, or any other country with proper gun laws?

False comparison - blatant misuse of statistics...sort of thing the Mail, Express or Sun would come up with.
