Pit Bull Dog Kills Baby Girl In Blackburn

Two people have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after a baby girl was found mauled to death by an illegal pit bull dog.

The eleven-month-old's mother and her mother's partner are being held in custody in Blackburn in connection with the fatal attack.

Chief Superintendent Chris Bithell of Lancashire Police said the suspects were initially arrested on child neglect charges. They were then re-arrested on the more serious charge of manslaughter.

Mr Bithell said Ava Jayne Corless was upstairs in bed at a house in Emily Street when the attack took place at around 11pm on Monday evening. The mother, 20, and her 26-year-old partner are understood to have been downstairs.

"This is an absolutely horrific incident in which a baby girl has lost her life and I would like to take this opportunity to express my own personal sympathy to the wider family of baby Ava," Mr Bithell said.

Police have confirmed the dog, which has been destroyed, was a pit bull terrier. The breed is prohibited under Section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.

Neighbours claim to have made previous complaints to police about the dog's behaviour. Police say an investigation is taking place to establish whether there were previous issues with the animal.

A post mortem is expected to take place to determine Ava's exact cause of death.

Nobody else was injured during the attack.
