Baby Shot Dead In Buggy: Teen Guilty Of Murder
A teenager has been convicted of murdering a baby who was shot in the face while in his buggy.
The trial heard De'Marquise Elkins pointed a gun and demanded money from Sherry West, the mother of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago, during an attempted robbery in Brunswick, Georgia.
When Ms West refused several times to hand over the cash, Elkins fired a warning shot and then shot her in the leg and the baby between the eyes, prosecutors said.
Ms West had testified during the two-week trial that she was walking home from the post office with Antonio in a buggy on the morning of March 21 this year.
She said a gunman demanding her purse shot her baby in the face after she told him she had no money.
Prosecutors said 18-year-old Elkins and an accomplice, 15-year-old Dominique Lang, were the ones who stopped West.
The jury was told the older teen pointed a small .22-caliber revolver at Ms West and demanded money and then opened fire.
De'Marquise Elkins' mother, Karimah Elkins, was on trial alongside him and was found guilty of tampering with evidence but acquitted of lying to police.
De'Marquise Elkins' lawyer asked for bail for his client while they appealed, which a judge denied.
Lang is also charged with murder in the case and is set to be tried later.
The baby's killing drew national attention, and the trial was moved to the Atlanta suburb of Marietta because of the extensive publicity locally.
Prosecutors have said information from Elkins' mother and sister led investigators to a pond where they found the revolver.
Karimah Elkins' sister also was charged with evidence tampering.
