Baroness Thatcher In Hospital After Surgery

Baroness Thatcher is recovering in hospital after undergoing surgery to remove a growth on her bladder.

The former Prime Minister is "absolutely fine" after the minor operation, a spokeswoman said.

The 87-year-old was admitted to hospital on Wednesday after complaining of pains. She is expected to remain there while she recovers.

Former Thatcher adviser Lord Bell said: "Following an examination in hospital on Wednesday Mrs Thatcher had a minimal invasive operation to remove a growth in her bladder.

"The operation was completely satisfactory.

"She will stay in hospital to recuperate for a few days and then she will return home. Her daughter Carol was with her in hospital.

"We will make no further comment."

Baroness Thatcher has suffered a number of health scares in recent years, including a series of minor strokes.

She was not well enough to join the Queen for a lunch with former and serving prime ministers as part of the Diamond Jubilee this summer.

And two years ago she missed an 85th birthday party thrown for her by David Cameron at 10 Downing Street.

In October she was sufficiently well, however, to mark her 87th birthday with lunch at a restaurant in London's exclusive St James's district with her son Mark and his wife.

Her health was thrust into the global spotlight this year when Meryl Streep starred in a controversial Hollywood film about her.

The Iron Lady drew criticism from Mr Cameron and others for concentrating on the dementia she has suffered after a series of small strokes. Streep won an Oscar for the role.

Baroness Thatcher was the first female prime minister - between 1979 and 1990 - and first female leader of the Conservative Party.

There has ALWAYS been a divide in this country, as in all countries, it's between capital and the labour movement, the exploiters and the exploited. At certain periods in history, that division comes to a head and explodes. The Thatcher government deliberately set out to provoke the miners' strike in order to destroy the power of the unions so it could then put its neo-liberal programme into action - privatising the utilities etc for their rich friends and de-regulating the finance and banking sector - thus we have today's situation, as Labour continued these Thatcherite policies.

I saw that item, Stephen. Also since buried was the item about UKIP's council election candidate in Essex (I think, or Kent) who called for compulsory abortion for foetuses who are diagnosed as Down Syndrome or spina bifida. UKIP suspended him but still allowed him to run on their ticket (?) - as Cameron said, 'fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists' and, you know what, each and every one of UKIP would kiss the feet of Thatcher.

I'd like to make a more 'positive, uplifting' comment. I remember the joy of watching her leave Downing Street in tears after our anti-poll tax campaign forced her 'colleagues' to finally ditch her because she had become an electoral liability. Millions of working class people organised against her poll tax - a blatant further transference of wealth from the poor to the rich. It was a fantastic movement and lessons to be learned for today against these cuts.

James, you are 100% correct. Well said. The poll tax was seized on by the left as a tool to attack her. When analyzed it is actually a fairer way to pay for our services. The problem was that councils got greedy. As for blair, still plain old mister and allways will be. Funny how its so hard to find anyone to admit they voted for him. Many people are proud to admit that they voted for Maggie though.
