Killer Escapes: 'Black Dog Strangler' On The Run

A convicted killer - dubbed the "Black Dog Strangler" - has escaped from a secure psychiatric hospital in Newcastle.
Police are hunting 44-year-old Phillip Westwater, also known as Philip Whiteman, who fled St Nicholas Hospital on Jubilee Road in Gosforth, at 10am.
He is described as white, 6ft tall, of slim build with brown/grey hair.
Westwater changed his clothes before fleeing and is believed to be wearing black Adidas Samba trainers, grey and black combat trousers, a black and blue jacket, gloves and a black hat.
He is a diabetic and uses an insulin pump. Police believe he has enough insulin to last him for three days.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Officers are making inquiries into this individual and any risks he may or may not pose.
"In the meantime people are asked to contact police on the 999 emergency number if they see him and not to approach him."
Westwater was detained indefinitely under the Mental Health Act.
In 1989, he attacked a man with a piece of glass in a pub fight, leaving the drinker paralysed for life.
The following year he strangled fellow patient Derek Williams at Ashworth Hospital in Liverpool with his dressing gown cord.
Westwater admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, having become convinced his victim had turned into a black dog.
He married a nurse while he was a patient at high-security Rampton Hospital in 2008.
They tied the knot in a social club at the Nottinghamshire hospital.
Before being treated at Rampton, Westwater had also been a patient at Broadmoor.
what do you think?

Here we go again. How on earth was he allowed to escape

Any chance of a photo?

john
And it's Gosforth, not Gosworth.

I was at Bart's as an outpatient in the gents. Then a security guard came in asked me to stand still for a few moments. I thought what is going on then this man came in wearing shackles on his feet and arms followed by a further 3 security guards, they were group 4 by the way. Then the prisoner asked which one of you wants to hold it. I was scared it was I suppose about a minute I just stood there almost shaking with fear. They left and the guard said ok sir off you go!!!" I will never forget it it was August 2004 Again if this person is deemed dangerous how has this been able to.happen? ?

Not a pleasant job! Did they draw straws?

Mike A Smith
A secure hospital? I think not.

john
If he was a patient at St Nicks then they were probably preparing him for release anyway.

movvi
Yes - he did it all by himself!

snape
if a nurse marries one of these freaks she is not fit to be a nurse.

Lorgar Aurelian
There are rules for medical staff fraternizing with their patients. She should be struck off following those rules.

I would be a bit worried if I was his wife. Let's hope he thinks she's a cat. :(

john
No orange, a photo of the escapee not the hospital.

Well if he has escaped in the buff he wont be stealing clothes off clothes lines in this weather and he can hardly go shop lifting so it sounds like some poor sod is going to cop it or a break in is on the cards- unless hes got help.

Ian Rowley
Surely if he's in a nightgown or similar he's gonna stand out like a sore thumb or a black dog with a sore thumb lmfao

movvi
He's wearing trainers, trousers and jacket and a hat and gloves!

movvi
"Secure hospital" sounds like a poor choice of words today. "Slim build" also seems a bit off the mark if that's a recent photo. The guy's built like a brick poophouse!
