Fire Tears Through Manhattan High-Rise
A raging fire has torn through a 42-storey apartment building in Manhattan, killing one man and leaving another critically injured.
After the blaze broke out on the 20th floor of the high-rise at 500 43rd Street on Sunday, scores of people were seen trying to escape from the smoke-filled building, witnesses said.
Firefighter spokesman Danny Glover said the fire was reported shortly after 11am and was brought under control by 40 units shortly before 1pm.
He said the smoke spread to several apartments around the affected area. It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze.
Police said the man who died, 27-year-old Daniel McClung, was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The other victim, a 32-year-old man, is in stable condition in hospital.
