Bloc Party write song about Occupy Wall Street

Rockers Bloc Party have confirmed their song Kettling was inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement rather than the riots last year.

The band released its comeback album, Four, in August after a three-year hiatus and frontman Kele Okereke has now revealed the song was written while he was in New York watching the civil unrest in the U.K. unfold on TV.

The track's title refers to a police technique which involves corralling protesters into confined spaces, which has been used during violent outbursts in London, but Okereke admits the song is more of a tribute to the Occupy Wall Street campaign movement which gained momentum last year.

He tells the Sydney Morning Herald, "Everyone thinks that song is about the London riots, and it is partially, but I was living in New York at the time and every time I turned on the television you were seeing some sort of civil unrest happening in different parts of the world.

"Kettling is more about the idea of protest than it is about the idea of rioting. I think more of the American Occupy movement than the rioters; I think the act of protesting is a very beautiful, idealistic thing and completely necessary in terms of the changing of power."
