Boca Juniors Football Fans Clash With Police

At least seven people have been injured after thousands of Boca Juniors fans celebrating Fan Day clashed with police in Buenos Aires.

The day started peacefully as supporters of the Argentinian team gathered at the Plaza of the Republic waving flags and setting off fireworks.

By evening a group of fans had climbed onto the roof of a takeaway.

The disorder reportedly began when police tried to force them down and some fans began to throw rocks and bottles.

Shop windows were smashed and police retaliated with tear gas causing several members of the public to flee the Plaza.

At least two protesters and five police officers were injured in the fighting, according to Argentina's Security Ministry.

The club's Fan Day erupted into violence last year when approximately 300 fans looted shops and clashed with police, prompting officers to respond with tear gas and rubber bullets.

On Monday, Boca Juniors - a division one team - finished the first half of the Argentinian football season out of contention for a title.
