Boy Killed In Hit-And-Run Crash In Bradford

Tributes have been paid to a 12-year-old boy who was killed after being hit on a crossing by a car driving away from police in Bradford.

Bilal Khizar was on his way home after visiting friends when he was hit by the vehicle on Rooley Lane, at around 7pm on Saturday.

A police car had stopped the red Seat Ibiza in a lay-by for a check but, when officers got out of their car, the vehicle sped off and hit the boy on a crossing close to an Asda store.

A police spokesman said: "He tragically died of his injuries."

The car failed to stop and continued onto the Chain Bar roundabout on the M606, where it collided with two other vehicles.

The car was later recovered on Westfield Lane, Wyke.

Detective Superintendent Mark Ridley of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, who is leading the investigation, said: "This is a tragedy for the family and they are absolutely devastated.

"Specially trained officers are currently working with them. I am appealing directly to anyone who saw the vehicle being driven or the incident to get in contact.

"I need the community to come forward and tell me what has happened and what they have seen to help bring justice to the family."

Neighbours and friends from Bilal's school, Bradford Academy, came to the scene to lay flowers.

Denise Laban, who lives near the Khizar family and who taught Bilal at primary school said he was a "beautiful young boy" and "always helpful and smiling".

Mrs Laban said she had visited the boy's family, who were "in pieces".

School friends Kayleigh Lowe and Kelsey Palmer described Bilal as "funny, kind and caring".

"He was really popular and lots of fun", they said.

Two people have been arrested as a result of police inquiries, which were said to be at a very early stage.

:: Any witnesses are asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

My feelings and best wishes go out to the family for their loss. I hope they find the person or persons concerned and they are dealt with justice that fits the crime. There is no exxcuse to just drive off after an accident and certainly not when people are concerned and deaths. Hope they catch them

Cant imagine what the family are going through. Thoughts and prayers with you all. How can someone be so cruel to leave a young boy like that.

Criminals running from the police. Had this been in the US, that car would have been stopped very quickly by police bullets. No dead little boy, just dead criminals.

Considering the number of innocent bystanders who get shot by American police, that's highly questionable. Not that that would happen in the first place as this is reality and not a die hard movie.
