Bradley Manning Faces WikiLeaks Court Martial

The US Army has confirmed that Bradley Manning, the US soldier charged with passing thousands of secret documents to WikiLeaks, will face court martial and the risk of life imprisonment.

In a statement the army said it had approved a recommendation that Private Manning be court-martialled for allegedly funnelling hundreds of thousands of classified documents to the whistle-blower site.

Prosecutors say WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange collaborated with the 24-year-old, who faces a total of 22 charges including "aiding the enemy".

The decision clears the way to set a court-martial date after sensitive documents were published on the internet.

"A military judge will be detailed by the US Army trial judiciary and that military judge will set the date for Manning's arraignment, motion hearings and trial," the army statement said.

Private Manning is also accused of stealing public property or records, transmitting defence information and of committing computer fraud.

A US investigating officer last month concluded that the 24-year-old soldier should be court-martialled because "reasonable grounds exist to believe that the accused committed the offences alleged".

That recommendation followed a seven-day pre-trial hearing in December to determine if there was sufficient evidence for him to face trial.

If convicted, he faces life in prison for what authorities have described as one of the most serious intelligence breaches in US history.

Trained on various intelligence systems, the Oklahoma soldier served in Iraq from November 2009 until his arrest the following May.

He is accused of giving WikiLeaks a massive trove of US military reports from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Authorities said he is also accused of passing on more than 250,000 classified US state department diplomatic cables, Guantanamo detainee assessments and videos of air strikes.

This man should not be in solitary confinement. Just about every single on tof this mans rights has been breached. When was embarrassing someone/thing by TELLING THE TRUTH a crime punishable by life in prison? I'm sure the famillies of those people killed by the US military in Iraq are now glad they know what hyappened to their loved ones.

Irrespective of his own personal feelings, he broke the law by what he did and must face the consequences. A man or woman who betrays their country has NO RIGHTS, especially when they are serving in their countrys armed forces at the time, its called TREASON and if it had happened in one of the coutries he was bleating about he would have been put against a wall and shot, endof

This man and Julian Assange should be given medals - they are not the enemy - but brave democrats who have highlighted the west's duplicity and true colonial intentions. I am no supporter of the Taliban, and I dont want the security of our brave soldiers compromised, however if the western governments didnt act like the criminals they are, if they followed a moral agenda (they talk about freedom, truth and liberty - then act against all their supposed beliefs) then there would be no need for individuals to expose their lies and secrets ! If you dont act immoraly, you have nothing to fear or to hide. ALL GOVERNMENTS SHOULD BE HELD TO ACCOUNT !

You are niaive and lacking in common sense at all levels. Firstly, he signed up for the military and so should be bound by their laws. Secondly, by releasing the thousands of documents he placed soldiers' lives at risk with his ill-informed, simplistic take on the whole security situation. He deserves to have the book thrown at him.

Ask him ... ouch! ... It's not easy ... typing ... with ... ow ... split skin in your finger tips but ask him owww if he has any secrets he wants to keep private to himself. If his answer is no, that's OK then, I would imagine. Or less bad.
