Brit Woman Held Over £1.6m Bali Drugs Haul

A 55-year-old British woman has been arrested in Bali for allegedly smuggling £1.6m worth of cocaine in her luggage.

Housewife Lindsay Sandiford was stopped with the 4.7kg haul in the lining of a suitcase as she arrived on a flight from Bangkok on May 19, customs officials said.

If convicted she faces a maximum penalty of death by firing squad.

Sandiford, who is originally from Redcar, North Yorkshire, attempted to cover her face as she was brought before the media at a news conference in Kuta, a holiday town on the Indonesian island.

She was pictured sitting at a table surrounded by packages wrapped in brown tape as a customs official cut them open with a knife.

Wearing an orange inmate's T-shirt, she was flanked by armed officers wearing black masks.

According to the Australian Associated Press news agency, Sandiford has told police she only agreed to make the trip because her children in England were being threatened.

A sting operation was launched following her arrest leading to four more suspects being held.

"For over a week, we conducted a controlled drug delivery through the suspect, Sandiford, to uncover a drug ring," said a senior Bali narcotics officer.

"Four Britons, including Sandiford, and one Indian citizen were arrested."

A further 68g of cocaine, 280g of powdered ecstasy and a small amount of hashish were recovered following the arrest of the other alleged gang members, officials said.

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We are aware of the arrest in Bali, and we stand ready to provide consular assistance."

More than 140 people are on death row as a result of drug convictions in the country, and a third of those are foreigners.

And we are meant to feel sympathy because? Let them use her for target practice, see if I care! She was willing to inflict misery on thousands of others just for money.

Serves her right, no sympathy, you know the law especially such as high profile as drug smuggling in the far east. Perhaps our Country should look at their methods for crime, but that would never happen too many do gooders.

The death penalty is unnacceptable for people transporting chemicals which occur in nature. Such countries do not belong in our civilised World. That woman doesn't even look like a drug smuggler. I don't believe she is. I think it's likely to be someone put some drugs in her suitcase and she is being blamed for it. She looks like a shop cashier. If you go on holiday to such primitive places, what do you expect? I read somewhere the Spanish happilly entitle themselves to own three drug plants each but foreigners can't. I don't know if that's true or not but it certainly seems like considering the garbage which humanity have evolved into.

I can say in the Canaries they turn a blind eye to 3 marijuana plants grown for personal use. Sensible.

idiot! Humanity is turning to crap because of people like you. I suppose your solution would be a slap on the wrist some counselling and a free holiday(not to one of those uncivilised countries though). "She doesnt look like a drug dealer", what do they look like then? You need to get your head out of your a**e and take a good long look at whats going on in the world before you start spouting total bull.

Just because the unrefined chemicals occur in nature, does not make them safe for humans to consume. Just think of some of the deadly poisons. Perhaps you also advocate the free movement of gunpowder (the three main constituents are natural).

Take her out of the gene pool for just being so stupid. What with dogs and other drug-detecting facilities - anyone who tries to smuggle cocaine just wrapped up in a case - needs their head examined. Drugs cause untold misery and death - let the punishment fit the crime.
