Britain Braced For Bitter Cold Snap

A shot of winter weather is on the way with forecasters warning that temperatures are likely to drop over the weekend.

Snow is predicted in Scotland and sleet in other areas, including northern England.

The RAC says it is expecting more calls, while road gritting and snow clearance teams say they are ready to deal with any disruption the first bout of wintry weather may bring.

Temperatures are expected to plunge to little above freezing on Friday and Saturday as schools break up for the half-term holiday.

Sky News weather presenter Isobel Lang said: "After the mild but murky weather of recent days, a big change is forecast over the next 24 hours with cold air plunging southwards.

"Motorists across Scotland will have wintry conditions to deal with through tonight and Friday.

"Ice and scattered sleet and snow showers may bring some travel disruption, especially across north-east Scotland.

"Snow is most likely to settle over hills. Some snow may settle further south, too, during Friday but only over higher ground exposed to the chill north wind such as the Cheviots, North Yorks Moors and Lincolnshire Wolds.

"Away from northeastern areas, Friday looks cold but on the sunny side. Top temperatures will be nearer 5C to 9C (45F).

"Rather than crisp, frosty, bright weather we are set for cloudier skies and some rain later on Saturday and during Sunday.

"It will still feel rather cold but temperatures are unlikely to be as low.

"As the rain spreads across the north west on Saturday it may be preceded by some hill snow.

"During Sunday expect temperatures of around 9C with rain at times."

I use a rock on a string. If its wet its rainig, if its swinging its windy, if I can't see it its foggy, if there is a shadow its sunny, if it turns white its snowing.

Ehh its only a bit of cold weather its not that bad right ? We can just turn on our modern gas heating and live in warm comfort. Doh! my bad thats right they put up the gas price how could i forget there timing so now its going to cost to much to have your heating on espesualy those in cash hard times so its ether time suit up in many many layers of clothing and look like the marshmallow man in your own home while you look at your inactive modern heating system or simply adopt the frozen corneto position as you watch the icicles form on your modern heating system

Think that's why the shop I work in have been selling more jumpers and fleeces cheaper than putting heating on

I remember well looking at the beautiful patterns left by Jack Frost on the inside of my mother's windows, and stepping out of bed onto the cold cold lino, jumping into my school clothes in a flash. When asked if i had been washed the blatant lie was "Yes". Never thought I would see those days again but they have returned. I suggest the councils can save fortunes by not upgrading radiators. They now just sit on the wall idle.

I think they're probably right this time because it has been getting colder, it is almost November and it's about the time of year which normally gets very cold. We don't usually have heat waves in November. I think a prediction of cold towards the end of October is likely to be more accurate than one of hot weather.

Wow! I am really pleased that the demonic energy companies just managed to get their price increases through in time to benefit from this cold snap. Got a letter thro the mail from British Gas in a print size far to small for an old man to read. So I returned it asking for a larger size and maybe spreading onto a second sheet (Blow the expense) Not sure what it was saying. Perhaps it was offering me a decrease in gas prices. I will wait with baited breath to see what they send me next
