Bucket Falls From Helicopter Through Shop Roof

A bucket of cleaning solution has fallen from a US military helicopter and smashed through the roof of a California business.

It happened near the Miramar Air Station in San Diego.

Marine Corps spokesman Lieutenant Tyler Balzer said the five-gallon bucket was strapped down inside an Osprey aircraft but it somehow came loose and slid out shortly after it took off.

He added that while mistakes do happen, this is "an opportunity for us to look at the already good safety measures we have in place for flying here in San Diego and improve on it".

The bucket plunged through the roof of a car shop, which was closed at the time. Fortunately, nobody was injured.

It clipped one vehicle and left several others covered in the cleaning solution.

Mr Balzer said the shop owners can file a claim with the Marine Corps for restitution.

The osprey is neither a helicopter nor a jet. So yet again some fantastic reporting

What would have happened if it has been something more deadly and landed in a hospital/school etc

Nothing would have been reported, the news channels would be full of another possible terror attack

I agree with it being called a helicopter. It takes off like one.

But flies like a plane. Heliplane? Aircopter?

Well, if y'er asking me, then, it isn't an ornithopter and it's not an autogyro so it must be a heliplane. I think it's very unlikely it would officially be called a heliplane because that is too obvious. I was wondering if there are reasons such as taxes why they call it a helicopter. Or if it is classed as a helicopter do they pay less other money than for a plane? Is insurance less for a helicopter?

One term that can be used is 'convertiplane'. It certainly is not a helicopter. It can also be described as a vertical take-off and landing, VTOL, transport.
