Burger King Twitter Feed Closed Over Hacking
The official Twitter account of the global fast food chain Burger King has been suspended after it was attacked by hackers.
The company's Twitter picture was changed to a McDonald's logo just after 5pm UK time.
A message was then posted on the Twitter feed, which read: "Just got sold to McDonalds because the whopper flopped."
The background image on the account was also changed to show McDonald's new Fish McBites product.
Subsequent posts on the account contained racial slurs, references to drug use and obscenities.
The account has since been suspended.
A spokesman for Burger King said: "It has come to our attention that the Twitter account of BURGER KING(R) brand has been hacked.
"We have worked directly with administrators to suspend the account until we are able to re-establish our legitimate site and authentic postings.
"We apologise to our followers who have been receiving erroneous tweets about other members of our industry and additional inappropriate topics."
In response to the hacking, McDonald's posted a message on its own Twitter feed which read: "We empathise with our @BurgerKing counterparts. Rest assured, we had nothing to do with the hacking."
No one has admitted to being behind the stunt, but hacking collective Anonymous has tweeted about the incident.
One message posted by Anonymous read: "We're guessing the @BurgerKing social media team is having a bad day...".
