'No Rift' In Coalition Over NHS Reforms

Senior Conservative MPs have told Sky News there is no rift in the coalition Cabinet over controversial NHS reforms.

David Cameron has insisted he is "at one" with Health Secretary Andrew Lansley and the legislation going through parliament.

Writing in The Sunday Times he also attacked Labour for "opportunism" on the issue, claiming the proposals were an "evolution" from changes introduced by the previous government.

In the last few days there has been growing pressure for the Health and Social Care Bill to be scrapped.

Several Conservative Cabinet ministers are said to have privately condemned Mr Lansley's handling of the package, with one suggesting the problems were now on the scale of the Poll Tax in the 1980s.

But Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Local Government, told Sky's Murnaghan show the Cabinet was "united". "I've been very supportive of these measures particularly as it enhances the role of local government," he said.

Lib Dem deputy leader Simon Hughes, however, broke ranks to demand Mr Lansley be shifted from his post.

"My political judgment is that in the second half of the parliament it would be better to move on," he told the BBC's Andrew Marr show.

A Downing Street source was also quoted last week saying that the Health Secretary should be "taken out and shot".

But Mr Cameron stressed there was no alternative to reform.

The PM - whose disabled son Ivan died in 2009 - said: "As a parent, night after night, I've known what it is to have the NHS by your side.

"I've seen the dedication - the reassurance that if the worst happens, the NHS will be there for your family.

"That's why I so strongly support the founding principle of the NHS: health care for all, free at the point of use, unrelated to the ability to pay. That won't change.

"But while the values are right, the system isn't. It needs to change - and that is why I am at one with Andrew Lansley, the reform programme and the legislation going through Parliament.

"The shortcomings of the status quo are well known. There's too much bureaucracy - and too much decision-making is led by that bureaucracy rather than clinicians."

Mr Cameron said the Government was providing an extra £12.5bn in this parliament to eradicate health inequalities and cope with cost pressures.

Mr Cameron insisted the Bill gave "power to doctors and nurses", and would lead to "more choice for patients and competition for treatment".

On Friday night Labour leader Ed Miliband wrote to the House of Lords asking them to "kill the health bill".

But Mr Lansley has brushed off suggestions that it is time he resigned in order to salvage the reforms.

"No, it is not. Because actually we as a government have committed to supporting the NHS," he told reporters.

"This legislation has been supported by the House of Commons, by the House of Lords."

It's effective privatisation of the NHS, pure and simple. What needs to be done is a total reorganising of hospital management and paperpushers, not selling bedspace to Tory party financial donors.

I think Cameron is misguided to back Lansley to this extent. The bill is badly flawed and extremely unpopular - it could (and should) kick back on him.

The NHS does not need any further privatisation, it needs less. Cameron and his cronies know that private medical institutions could never survive in the real world, so they are allowed to attach themselves to the NHS milking it for whatever they can. This mix of private and public intrest in the health service is all wrong. The tories are supposed to believe that competition is the breath of life, so why dont they cut the private sector away from the NHS and see if they can stand on their own two feet, instead of allowing them to use the premises, facilities, equipment, trained staff etc that we pay for. Come on Cameron give us back our once well run, fair and envied National Health Service

Absolutely right! Unfortunately this post is about the NHS - but forgive me if I point out a similar example: Labour did the same with Roytal Mail! It took away the letter monopoly that underpinned a universal, nationwide letter service for everyone in the country, at affordable cost. The result was the privateers jumped in headed straight for the most lucrative pre-sorted bulk business mails (the realy profitable stuff) and they didn't have to provide their own post boxes or foot soldiers to do daily collections and deliveries to every part of the Kingdom! They simply got the Labour Government to agree to them using the RM's "downstream pipeline" (i.e. the Postmen/women) to do their home letter deliveries for them - at ludicrously cheap rates. (Except in vary rare cases and with privately carried packets and parcels the majority of letters you recieve are delivered by the Post Person - no matter whose name appears on the envelope!) So you have lost several collections a day (in larger conurbations), Sunday collections, and two deliveries a day and your mail now turns up at any time of day as delivery rounds have been extended to save staff. Oh, and as forecast beforehand, your letter prices have had to go up because of the considerable loss of business post revenues that previously subsidised domestic mail. Labour (and Tories both) took government work and payments away from Post Offices and gave it to Banks and other retailers. The result - hundreds of smaller Post Offices became uneconomic and have had to close. So to hundreds of Sub-Post Offices - often taking a very useful local shops with them. These politicians must be in the grip of the EU unelected mafia who are forcing their business ideals upon us to make bigger profits for the few. The NHS was a public service - so on their dictate - it now has to be opened up to "competition" and more corruption and swindling of the taxpayers will almost inevitably follow! Let's all come back here in 2 - 3 years and see who was right!

Top 10 List of Camerloons craziest ideas. 1) We are all in this together.....really, but some are more in it than others. 2) Tax breaks for women employing cleaners....... gets 9 /10 for laughs alone that one. 3) As we are all living longer i would back a plan to work till 73yrs old.......hmmn living longer if you happen to have a job where you sit on your backside all day and dont do hard phisical graft in a dusty atmosphere. 4) Be the odd one out of 26 countrys in the latest EU fiasco.....might have a point on that one, but remains to be seen. Normally you would think its impossible to be the only one out of 26 that says "no" to be right. The odds aint great. 5) We are going to make work pay.....I say wheres the evidence. 6) Camerloons senior adviser came up with this one, "the UK should abolish maternity leave".......lol, that sounds really popular particularly with the womens vote "not". 7) Drinkers will pay a minimum price for alcohol under plans instigated by David Cameron to tackle a growing health crisis......good one this, real vote clincher, get your grog at minimum price, sounds cheap to me. 8) Tax credits changing working hours to 24 instead of 16??......Im not sure what he said about this one but hes defo going for it, should prove really popular with working mums that one. 9) Everyone should pay off their credit card debt......ahh ok i will remember that when im yet again on my last tenner and no grub in the cupboard, hmmn wonder where my tenner will go, tescos looks most likely. Ive saved the best till last! 10) "The Big Society"..................What is it ? Feel free to add to the list, im sure theres plenty to go at.

The original need was supposed to be to overhaul and improve the NHS system of management and control (especially the unaffordable number oftop salaries) and a lot of ludicrous political correctness unrelated to decent health care. We wanted the Government to make it more efficient and to ensure best practice was more universal and cost efficient, I suspect. But the coalition is going further. It is trying to remove the NHS from direct ministerial control and thereby making it less answerable to Parliament. It is also a plan to part-privatise the NHS in accordance with EU directives to allow private companies to make profits from public services. If that please one - then so be it. Only time will tell if that is the Improvement we all wanted to see. If all the money spent on private health care was spent on the NHS for everyone's benefit - not just those who can afford the private fees - we should have a truly splendid service. It is a pity that all the health care professional bodies have left it so late to really stand up and speak out.- We needed to know their views much sooner! One other point - is that the Lib Dems are tied in to this plan makes them equally responsible and accountable to the elctorate if it does turn out to be more about profiteering than really improved health care! Remember this come the next General Election!
