Cathy Dennis urges One Direction to avoid songwriting
Renowned songwriter Cathy Dennis has warned One Direction not to try creating their own hits because she fears it would spell "the kiss of death" for the group.
Dennis, who has co-written chart-toppers including Britney Spears' Toxic and Katy Perry's I Kissed A Girl, is convinced the pop stars will soon want to start taking more control of their music so they can enjoy a larger share of the royalty payments.
However, Dennis fears their lack of experience will let them down.
She tells The Sun newspaper, "It will be expected that they will write their own songs at some point. Someone is going to say, 'Hang on, the royalties coming in from just singing are not enough'. The guys who wrote (One Direction's hit track) What Makes You Beautiful are millionaires. But if 1D started writing their own songs it could be the kiss of death, let's face it. I am not going to advocate that. To emulate the Rolling Stones - you can't have that overnight. I would not expect them to come out with anything amazing."
