Childcare Better In Wealthy Areas, Report Says

Children from wealthier areas receive a better standard of childcare, according to a new report.

Research by Policy Exchange showed Ofsted judged 79% of childminders in the richest parts of England as good or outstanding, compared to 64% in the most deprived areas of the country.

It also found that children from richer areas were further ahead when they started primary school.

In the City of London and Trafford 78% were at a good level, compared to just 51% in Middlesbrough at the bottom of the list.

The vocabulary development of the poorest children was 16 months behind those from the highest income families, the report said.

Harriet Waldegrave, the author of the report said: "Early years education will only have a positive impact on a child's development if it is of a high quality.

"While provision is improving, it's not doing so fast enough. Most worryingly of all, lower quality provision in disadvantaged areas means positive effects of early years education are less likely to be seen for the children who need it most."

The government is now being asked to improve the quality of early years teaching and the financial support it gives to families with lower incomes.

In response, a Department for Education spokesperson said: "This report is absolutely right to say early years education needs to improve.

"We need to learn from other countries that ensure the profession is better trained and give them the freedom to do their job. We will be announcing plans on improving the quality of provision shortly."

what do you think?

Ofsted have just changed their policy on childminding and changed all their certificates to allow childminders to choose how many children they are allowed to care for ! They have also cut their inspection times down to a very short time only once every four years and their inspection reports will now be a paragraph long !!!! Where is the sense in this ???? Guidelines should be getting tougher not easier !!!! Government cuts in wrong areas ....again !!!!

My certificate tells me how many children I can look after & my paperwork is more now than 3 years ago

Hi Kelly . My new certificate came through this week . It has total numbers of children but I can pick my ages etc and they have removed all stipulations such as , my kitchen is not registered and only my bathroom on first floor was registered . Now it's just the house registered and no rooms are mentioned . It's a really bad idea x

I will need to look into that as i didn't know it Kinberley. Mine are grown now but the situation you describe sounds very wrong. Can we look forward to gin soaked victorian "minders" with thirty kids in their charge?

Hardly surprising really, next they will be reporting that restaurants are better in wealthy areas! Early influences are very important to all children and some people in less wealthy areas are well aware of this and do their best for their children. I always tried to encourage them to speak correctly and to not use slang etc. Unfortunately when you see some parents speaking to their offspring its no wonder they are behind in developing vocabulary. If a parent, swears or hardly speaks in sentences then no wonder the children do the same. A study in the 70s shown that middle class children did better in school because they spoke the same quality of English as the teachers and exam boards and children from lower social groups often struggled. In short we need to stop the lowest standards from people as acceptable and use preschool as a method of improving the lot of children from poorer areas.

Dont see the issue.childcare is more expensive in these areas which I know from personal experience.therefore id expect the quality to be better.the more you pay, the better the service.just like anything in life

But it shouldn't be like that mark . I have been a childminder for 16 years and if you do this job and take my job as a professional childminder serious, It Should not matter what area you live in ! If I did this job for the money I would never ever be rich but my joy is in watching the children I care for grow and develop and feel safe and secure !!!! Ofsted are making big mistakes in their registration of childminders and bad childminders are going to cram more children in to make more money . It's wrong on so many levels !!!!

Kimberley you are so right. If you are a professional you do your job to the best of your ability not according to what your nursery charges the parents. I have used ( and removed my children from!) such places.

Yes! Lets use Middlesbrough as the scapegoat . Yes we have poor areas, but for every Middlesbrough, there are 5 or 6 areas within London with the same standard, at least we have the North Yorkshire country air!
