China: Six Children Drown In Skating Accident

Six children have drowned while ice skating on a frozen river in northern China.

The children, aged between five and 11, fell through the ice on a section of the Huiji River, near a village in China's northern Shanxi Province, local government sources said.

Officials said an emergency rescue operation was launched after police were alerted to the incident at 4.47pm local time.

Video footage caught the moment one rescue worker fell into the freezing-cold waters as he tried to reach the place where the children were thought to have fallen in.

His colleagues use a rope to drag him through the ice to safety.

They later used rubber inner tubes as life buoys to help speed up the operation.

The bodies of four children were discovered at around 6pm.

Divers found the remaining two bodies an hour-and-a-half later after darkness fell.

All six children were taken to hospital but could not be saved.

Authorities say they are investigating the incident.
