City Bosses Tell Osborne To Axe 50p Tax Rate

Some of the City's top business leaders have urged Chancellor George Osborne to "accelerate" plans to scrap the 50p rate of tax but the Prime Minister hints it could stay.
They claim the rate cut should be implemented as an "immediate action" to shore up Britain's economy against the fallout from the eurozone crisis.
The reduced rate will help attract entrepreneurs to the UK and increase the tax-free personal allowance by £1,000 more than planned next year, the group said in the letter published in the Daily Telegraph.
But the Prime Minister has hinted it is here to stay for the time being.
"I have been very clear - we have all been very clear - that we have to do this in a way that is fair so that the broadest backs bear the biggest burden," David Cameron told the BBC.
"That is why we haven't changed for instanced the 50p tax rate."
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said millions of people on ordinary incomes are currently worried about making ends meet and paying for Christmas.
"I do not believe the priority at a time like that is to give a tax cut to a tiny, tiny number of people who are much, much better off than everybody else," he said.
The business leaders' call came as Business Secretary Vince Cable confirmed the Government was making contingency plans amid the "Armageddon narrative" of the potential collapse of the euro.
Europe's economic crisis deepened on Thursday as Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn warned: "Growth has stalled in Europe, and there is a risk of a new recession."
Overall EU GDP - the combined national wealth of the 27 member states - is now projected to "stagnate" until well into 2012, with the commission downgrading its growth forecast of 1.8% next year to 0.5%.
The only optimism was a projected return to "slow growth" of about 1.5% by 2013.
David Cameron has called on eurozone leaders to "act now" to save the single currency but warned Italy poses a "clear and present danger" to the eurozone's future.
That would "damage our economy" and our banks, he warned.
UK Treasury officials are drawing up contingency plans to deal with the impact on Britain of a collapse of the single currency.
The City bosses also called for a hike in spending on infrastructure projects to help revive Britain's ailing economy.
"We would encourage an acceleration of the Government's commitments on two areas of tax policy: increasing the personal allowance and restoring 40% as the top rate of income tax," the letter said.
"An early removal of the temporary 50% tax rate would attract wealth generators to the UK and support the entrepreneurs we need to help us grow the economy and provide jobs.
"We await the conclusions of the HM Revenue and Customs evaluation of the sums raised by the 50% rate; however, we are confident that the cost to the Treasury, if any, in the short term will not be material and that the advantages over the life of this Parliament in terms of generally increased economic activity will more than outweigh any direct costs."
The suggestion was criticised by union boss Brendan Barber, General Secretary of the TUC.
He described the signatories as a "bunch of very rich people saying that they should make the ultimate sacrifice of paying less tax to help the economy".
Mr Barber added: "Any plan for growth should ease the position of low to middle-earners, not the super-rich."
what do you think?

What is the betting that this is one proposal on which cameron and clegg actually do more than talk the talk - all those amended tax coding notices are probably already prepared !

thats right .....make them filthy rich pigs even wealthier, while the rest of us are offsetting Fuel for car V heating +lighting V food on the table .Think themselves lucky that in the middle of this financial meltdown that they are earning enough to be in that tax bracket.A disgrace.Start by bringing V.A.T back down to 15 % if you want to get the country moving again as a virtual instant fix that will save most of us £800 a year .Increasing personal allowance will take far to long and with bills going up it will be out of date before we receive it.This lot are a joke.

So Osbourne will reduce tax for millionaires and he has said that he will increase tax for the poor and middle class. He also wants to cut all benefits for the poor and OAPs and freeze the State Pension and freeze the tax free allowance. Inflation is still rising and in January he wants to increase tax on fuel. He backs the BoE freezing interest and increasing QE. SO OSBOURNE IS VERY BAD. He also wants to increase all green tax and APD, so 98% of the country will go broke. He has cut winter fuel benefits. But he is giving well over 1 trillion to overseas countries. Our economy will now totally collapse. The Sterling is the 2nd lowest currency in the world after Zimbabwe. Exports are collapsing and he is borrowing more than Labour. Now we need a new General Election.

wait, wait, this government sucks, we all know this, BUT labour was kicked out cause they were useless as well, the problem is everything has been privatised so you no longer have control over anything. There's no good political leaders... period!!

When will the ignorant, the uneducated and the socialists in the UK understand that the top 1% of wage eareners contribute 25% of the total tax the exchequer receives, and the top 10% of wage earners contribute 50% of the total tax. To use the awful socialost termonology of "equality". I think the top 10% of wage earners i.e those above £45000 pay far more than their share to this society.

I wish I was rich enough to pay 50p tax. I wouldn't mind doing so as I would still have millions to spend. As the sayings go - you can't take it with you, you can only live in one house at a time you can only drive one car at a time, and you soon get tired of travelling the world.

Gary Jennings
Its true what sunshine said, top 1% contribute 25% of paye tax and also the same of the top 10%, but the 50% tax rate is only paid on income above £150,000 and the 40% on income above £45,000, if you lucky to earn over £45,000 per year or over £150,000 per year good luck to you, but spare a thought for all thoes that are working for the so called min wage of £6.08 per hour trying to make ends meet becouse that is only work they find, and all the people that have worked all there lives paid there tax's to be told there benefits and pansions are to be cut, one the quickest way's put money back in peoples pockets would be to reduce the VAT back down to 15%, that would benefit everybody and not just the top 10% of people in this country, or should i say the tory backers? .

George, cut the bankers a deal, They get rid of their bonuses and feed that back into banking to cut bank charges and interest rates and they can go back to 40%. But alas they are GREEDY and will want to keep what us ordinary people will never get (big fat bonuses for losing money) and they want it for nothing.

tagliatellius
Put the top rate up to 95%, they will still be worth a fortune.

George Osbourne has already stated he will reduce the rich elites' tax from 50% to 23%! We should raise them to at least 80%. If these spongers threaten to leave the country, I say let them, but their assets stay here. We created their wealth and we want it back. Take the banks over and let's get our money back to invest in creating jobs, homes, services and growth. The wealthy, who the three main parties represent, have created the problem, they should be made to pay. Unions should escalate strike action after November 30. We can topple this government. Unions should disaffiliate from 'LABOUR' and create our own party to put policies in place that benefit the majority.

When David Cameron was Shadow Prime Minister he voted yes on nearly all labours new laws. Over the last 400 years the opposition partys voted once or twice in support of the Government. Cameron did 3 line whips for nearly everything that Blair and brown wanted and is now backing the Lib Dems on everything. So David Cameron is not a Conservative and his party should throw him out.
