Clarkson Cleared Over 'Shoot Strikers' Jibe

Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson did not break broadcasting rules when he said striking public sector workers "should be shot", TV watchdog Ofcom has ruled.
The controversial star was forced to apologise after he made the remark on The One Show last November.
His comment sparked nearly 32,000 complaints and led to condemnation from union leaders and politicians, including David Cameron, who said the statement was "silly".
On November 30, on the evening of Britain's biggest public sector strikes for 30 years, Clarkson said that he would take the striking workers outside and "execute them in front of their families".
Ofcom launched an investigation in December but said that the comments, while "potentially offensive", were justified by the context.
Hosts Matt Baker and Alex Jones introduced Clarkson by alluding to his provocative and outspoken nature, the watchdog said.
It added that viewers of the BBC1 show would have expected Clarkson to make "potentially controversial or offensive statements" because of his "well-established public persona and that it would have been clear "that his comments were not an expression of seriously held beliefs".
Some viewers, less familiar with Clarkson's style, may have considered the comments offensive but the programme ended with an apology, Ofcom said.
The comments "were not made seriously and were not at all likely to encourage members of the public... to act on them in any way", it added.
Last year, the BBC apologised about an item on BBC2's Top Gear which led to the Mexican ambassador complaining about the "outrageous, vulgar and inexcusable insults" made about Mexicans by Clarkson and co-hosts James May and Richard Hammond.
what do you think?

As usual one rule for the rich and famous another for the poor.Perhaps Clarkson and Ofcom are the ones that need shooting.

Paul Garratty
Want to buy a sence of humor good price

keith
OFCOM shooting. YES! Not Clarkson.

Who cares what Clarkson says. We all should know by now that he is the last man to talk PC. Yes he does put his foot in it every so often, but the BBC would be a duller place if he was not on the TV. There are more problems in this world to worry about than JC. If the 32,000 people gave the £1 that it probably cost them in time and effort to complain about something so petty as want JC thinks to charitable organisations like Cancer Research or the RNLI this world would be a better place. Instead of complaining about someone else. Help someone else!!!

Mike A Smith
Spot on, Kevin. 32,000 morons who have nothing better to do. If you don't like him, don't watch. Is my TV unusual in having an OFF button?

keith
MIKE & KEVIN. WELL SAID.

Paul Anthony Croft
I agree. His remarks were nor meant to be taken seriously, Ever heard of satire, irony, humour? We all know he makes fatuous remarks, why stay up to watch him if you know you are going to be offended?

Who takes any notice of this person anyway?. He is nonsense personified. Petter. Holmfirth.

Quite agree with Richard when will the BBC get rid of this man - he seems to get away with anything - if it was anyone else they would have been sacked - Brand/Ross comes to mind - time Top Gear was taken off air - Fifth Gear is a much better programme

Russell Clarke
Brand / Ross most people didn't know about that till it was on the news two weeks later when complaints went from around a hundred to over 40 k and what they said and Sid was worse but it's the people jumping on the band wagon just feel like they need to complain . He ment it as a joke and yes he does get away with saying a lot but that's what he does if you don't like it don't watch it tbh i really don't care what he says but I'm made of tougher stuff than the 32 k that complained !!!

keith
Evelyn, It's the BBC we need to get rid of!

gengisken1227
Purely on grounds of kindness, Fifth Gear should be shot

antfrog2000
....good, he is a funny man!!! If people are offended by what he says, don't watch or listen to anything he is in. Simple!!!!

DermottJoe
unfortunatley, regardless of what intelligent people think of this bombastic jumped up snob, he is in a position of some influence ,albeit the fools that watch top gear.he still must be punnished appropriatley for such words.if he had said it about about an old fading actor he would have been dismissed ala mr ross and brand.but it was only the british public, myself included he said he would shoot in front of my family,so joe public dont count cos they have no celebrity....OFF WITH HIS HEAD.

peter
What good did the strikes do anyway ? I'd forgotten all about the strikes. What a total waste of manpower they were. We were all promised they would change the face of Britain forever. Complete tosh. That day must have passed me by as i didn't notice a thing. Teachers - No kids at school - so not missed Bin men - Not our day for collection - so not missed Traffic wardens - Did not park anywhere - so not missed Border Control - Did not travel - so not missed Street Cleaners - Never seen any so not missed Libraries - Dont use them so not missed Swimming baths - closed down 12 months ago so not missed Park Attendants - No park nearby so not missed Public Transport - Not used so not missed.

This country has lost it's sense of humour along with everything else if some of the comments here are to be believed.I saw the programme and it was typical Clarkson tongue in cheek..Get a life people.

Ken Smith - Learn to read - CONTEXT not content - The 'execution' remark was made in the interests of balance - the BBC's usual stand of always balancing one remark with another, opposite remark - he said that it was great as London was so soquiet, but in the interests of balanced opinion they should be executed in front of their families - it was having a pop at the pointless balancing the BBC has to do as anything else.

Bert Nernie
To everyone; dig out the clip on youtube before you make stupid judgments based on reading half the interview in the Daily Mail If you listen to the whole thing perhaps you won't jump on the wrong bandwagon

Bert Nernie
Evelyn Fordyce - did you even hear the Brand/Ross interview at time of broadcast, or get 'enraged' after the event when the reports came out? Whilst it was offensive, it wasn't live - some idiot at the BBC made the choice to broadcast it - don't complain about Ross/Brand, complain about the brain-donor that put it on the air If it wasn't for digital copies of these programs, half of them would never be complained about - so-called comedians in the nineties made far more offensive remarks on TV yet the lack of a website where idiots like you could go and download it after you heard all the fuss being made meant very few complaints were made. If you didn't hear/witness the show at the time of live broadcast, I believe you should not be entitled to complain about it, too many gullible sheep get whipped into a whinge-frenzy by tabloid hate-mongers trying to tear strips off the BBC

Clarkson for PM

Stuart Harley
Im with Peter at 4.08..........the "Strikes" were for what...and who remembers, and as for Clarkson, he is just a good presenter !!!! nobody can argue against that !!!!!!!

tagliatellius
Clarkson should be beaten to death with the severed limbs of his family, only joking, just a bit of fun.

Pete Maidment
i agree clarkson for pm

John Henderson
Ofcom, the IPCC, the PCC and so on. No need to comment !

David Wragg
I don't like Clarkson or his over-the-top style, but while his remarks fell far below the standard one would expect, I think that OFCOM were right not to blow this up out of proportion. Let it rest. The irony is that if they took it further, it would probably inflate his silly ego even further.

What? Clarkson's comments were justified by the content? Ofcom, be ashamed, be very ashamed.
