Danger As Electrical Product Recalls Ignored
Millions of potentially deadly electrical appliances are sitting in homes around the country despite attempts to recall the products, consumers are being warned.
The Electrical Safety Council (ESC) says one person is killed every seven days by an electrical accident and 350,000 people are injured annually, partly because of a "shockingly low" response to product alerts.
The charity found the average success rate of a product recall is just 10%-20%.
With 266 product recalls in the last six years and manufacturers making hundreds of thousands of items, it is thought millions of dangerous items stay in people's homes.
Research by the ESC shows almost two million adults have knowingly ignored a recall notice and a further one million admit owning an electrical item that has been recalled.
The researchers also found many consumers would jeopardise their safety if sending back a recalled product was too inconvenient or meant going without a luxury item such as a television or hair straighteners.
The ESC is launching an online tool that will allow users to quickly and easily discover if they own an electrical product that has been recalled.
The charity's Emma Apter said: "The small inconvenience of returning a recalled item is worth it when you consider that faulty products can electrocute or cause a fire.
"We firmly believe that there is more that retailers and manufacturers can do to help ensure customers are aware when a product has been recalled, and what to do if they need to return an item."
what do you think?
I for one dont see or hear of these recalls and what has been recalled.in fact despite this news item i still dont.
I spotted one the other day in the daily mail,it was a sandwich toaster made for asda. Problem here is companies like this import thousands of products like this from China and a lot of Chinese made electrical goods can be purchased wholesale for about 50p a product then asda sell it as smart price for £5

If the product is dangerous and its seems a lot of recalls are power units and plugs Put the information on the TV news bulletin radio stations front page on news papers all for free .they can easily do all that by just taking all the rubbish none news reports off . Breaking news ceril Baker stuck on motorway over night or If you have the old style virgin media modem Please unplug and contact them as they are a fire risk
And i have never seen these recall adverts. I can only assume they are placed on the back page of the Beano and Dandy. And as most plugs look the same have we got to drag every item back to the shop for checking. I suppose this is the price for getting electrical item made abroad just like the horse meat scandal no checks until it is too late. When i buy something everyone wants to know my address so if anyone should no if i have a faulty product it's the shop.
Emma D'apter...the right person for the job! 'Shockingly' low....oh dear.
What recall notices? The only ones I ever see are in Tesco and those are mainly for toy items and non-electrical. I've never seen one in an electrical shop, Curry's etc., so where are they?
