'Deal With Devil' Killing: Two Teens Charged
Two teenagers have been charged with killing a 15-year-old girl in what investigators believe was a murder motivated by an occult ritual.
Corriann Cervantes was found dead in a vacant apartment in Houston, Texas, on Saturday with an upside down crucifix carved into her stomach.
Seventeen-year-old Jose E Reyes and a 16-year-old boy have been charged with capital murder over her death.
Harris County prosecutor John Jordan said Reyes told his 16-year-old friend he had sold his soul to the devil, and if they killed Corriann, his friend could sell his soul as well.
Mr Jordan said the 16-year-old suspect gave a recorded confession to police, telling investigators Corriann attempted to flee when she was attacked.
"During the course of events, this teenager screamed, 'Why are you doing this to me?' the prosecutor said.
The apartment, where the girl was stabbed, beaten and sexually assaulted, had several signs of occult activity, Mr Jordan said.
"What happened in that vacant apartment was sadistic," he said. "What will eventually happen ... will be justice."
Corriann was reportedly beaten with an ashtray and a toilet lid.
She had puncture wounds from a screwdriver on her face and she was also apparently strangled.
However, because of the extent of her injuries her exact cause of death has still not been established.
Reyes is being held without bond at the Harris County jail.
The 16-year-old, who has not been identified because of his age, is being held at a juvenile detention facility.
