Tetra Pak Heir's Wife 'Was Addicted To Drugs'

A close friend of multi-millionaire Eva Rausing, who was discovered dead in her London mansion, has told Sky News she was a "troubled soul" whose death was "something we all thought would happen".

Eva Rausing's body was discovered by police on Tuesday after officers pulled over her husband, Tetra Pak heir Hans Kristian Rausing, for erratic driving - and allegedly found drugs in his car.

A subsequent search of the couple's five-storey town house in Cadogan Place led to the discovery of Mrs Rausing's body.

Mrs Rausing's friend of 15 years, who did not want to be named, said: "I would definitely say she would have died from an overdose.

"Eva was a troubled soul and he (her husband) was equally troubled. She wasn't openly handing around drugs, but you knew she was on it."

It is thought that her husband was arrested in connection with the death, and has since been moved to a "medical facility" where treatment could last for a number of days.

The Metropolitan Police would not confirm the name of the man in custody, but said a 49-year-old man had been arrested in south London.

The friend, living nearby in Belgravia, explained she and Eva Rausing had become good friends because their children attended the same school, Garden House.

"She was a dear friend, it's such a tragedy," she said.

"The last time I saw her was a couple of months ago. She had cut herself off from people for a while, especially since the incident at the US embassy."

American-born Mrs Rausing and her husband had met at a rehab clinic in the US and had been battling publicly with their addiction since 2008.

That year, Mrs Rausing was caught in possession of crack cocaine and heroin as she attended a reception at the US embassy in London. All charges were dropped.

Over the years the couple has given many millions of pounds to charity including Action On Addiction, the charity for which Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, is currently patron.

"Eva tried hard to turn things around and went to about every rehab around," her friend said.

"I heard she may have been dead in the house for a while, but it was rare for him (Hans) to be out of the house for more than a few hours.

"They stayed indoors a lot and mostly lived in a small part of the house.

"We had great times together. She was such a fun, gregarious woman. Drug addiction is an illness and it's such a tragedy."

A post-mortem examination on Tuesday failed to identify a formal cause of death. Further toxicology tests are being carried out.

Officers from the Homicide and Serious Crime division are now investigating the case "and the death continues to be treated at this time as unexplained," police said.

Mrs Rausing's family issued a statement saying they are "deeply saddened by the death of their beloved daughter".

Her parents Tom and Nancy Kemeny said: "Eva was a devoted wife for 20 years and mother of four much-loved and wonderful children.

"During her short lifetime she made a huge philanthropic impact, supporting a large number of charitable causes, not only financially, but using her own personal experiences.

"She bravely fought her health issues for many years. The family is devastated at her death and asks to be given privacy at this difficult time."

Her husband's family said: "Hans and Marit Rausing and their family are deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic death of their daughter-in-law Eva Louise Rausing. They ask that their privacy be respected at this sad time."

What a horrible attitude to have. a person has lost their life!!!!! i think you might change your attitude if one of your children ever started taking drugs. There are many reasons why people take drugs. I've had two friends who have died of a drug overdose. one was only 16 and the other had had a miserable and extremely difficult childhood that left him emotionally scarred. neither were bad people. They needed help and were let down. you heartless prat!!!!

Oh I just love people who are so judgemental, what right do you have to speak to someone like that who has lost people they know, I have no understanding why someone would want to get themselves mixed up with drugs but people do things due to their own position in life, it's the same as someone drinking, eating too much or smoking, I don't understand why people want to do it to themselves but it happens, lets just hope one that you don't have to watch someone you love kill themselves slowly by taking anything they shouldn't.

Sadly in this instance I side more with tess. This woman had 4 kids. 6 billion in the bank. She sounds to me like a selfish character that wanted cheap rushes. It's not exactly like she was living in a Glasgow estate with no future. People in high society do drugs for different reasons generally to the average joe.

Money doesn't bring happiness. wealthy people often feel lonely and isolated. They are often surrounded by people that are friends with them because of the money. she may well have suffered from depression or have an unhappy home life, have been abused in the past or any number of things that made life hard to bare. people often take drugs to numb the pain of horrible things that have happened to them. Try a little sympathy instead of judging someone you don't know. im sure you guys are perfect human beings!!!!!!

Dan to presume all people who take drugs have had a very hard life one way or another is stupid. A lot of people start it as a bit if fun. Face facts. I know a good few people on drugs iny lifetime. Some people can take them all there life and live a happy existence. Drugs are not as bad as people make out. But abuse them and they are very sanerous. But I guess you could say that about most things in life.

ali baba, people do a lot of things in life that deserve a death sentence. Taking drugs is not one of them. People who deal in drugs, deserve to die. People who are weak, or under stress and for various other reasons, can so easily end up on drugs. That doesn't mean they deserve to die. What kind of a person are you. You and tess need educating. Pair of pathetic bloody fools. Too judgemental by far.

Am I the only person to notice the word "inconclusive" in the results of the initial post mortem, surely if her death was caused by a drugs overdose this would show in the results! I think that some people are far to quick to judge and should wait for all the evidence before jumping to conclusions, under any circumstance a death for the family is devastating and my thoughts go out to her children!

After reading most if not all of the comments on here, i must say i don't have any sympathy for anyone who does drugs, doesnt matter what social background they are from. Unless they were forced to use them because their life was in danger if they didnt then fine, thats a different debate for a different day, but if they choose to use them...knowing full well what they can do (and we've all had the drugs lessons at school), then sorry, I'm not going to mourn and cry over a millionaire who couldn't keep on the straight and narrow even with the money she's got.

Well , if that's the way you look at life. People who join the army deserve to die. Or people who smoke , deserve lung cancer, or people who have a drink deserve sclerosis. What about people who do dangerous sports, do they deserve to die. There are a lot of things people do, for many different reasons. No one deserves to die for being stupid enough to use drugs. They are mistaken, and need help. They have no chance, if you and your ilk are typical of society. It'll affect your family , one day. Let's hear your sneering, then.

to all the mean spirited anti drug no nothings on the forum. what did this woman ever do to any of you. or is it you cant handle the fact she was wealthy and didnt conform to the lifestyle you in your ivory towers think she should have. addiction is a very very hard thing to break free from. its an illness. she may have had all of the material things in life but she must have been very unhappy. there arnt many happy drug addicts.try and show a little compassion thats what is lacking in the world. i hope she,s found some peace at last
