Death Row Man: 'I'm Too Fat To Be Executed'

A death row inmate who weighs at least 34 stone says he is too fat to be executed.
Ronald Post, who shot and killed a hotel clerk in northern Ohio almost 30 years ago, said his weight could lead to a "torturous and lingering death".
Ohio executes inmates with a single dose of pentobarbital, usually injected through the arms.
Court documents submitted by his lawyers said vein access, scar tissue, and other medical problems raise the likelihood that his executioners would encounter severe problems.
It is also claimed he is so big that the execution gurney might not hold him.
"Indeed, given his unique physical and medical condition there is a substantial risk that any attempt to execute him will result in serious physical and psychological pain to him, as well as an execution involving a torturous and lingering death," court papers said.
He has tried losing weight, but knee and back problems have made it difficult to exercise, his lawyers wrote.
His request for gastric bypass surgery has been denied, he has been encouraged not to walk because he is at risk of falling, and severe depression has contributed to his inability to limit how much he eats, his legal team added.
Post, 53, is scheduled to die on January 16 for the 1983 shooting death of Helen Vantz in the town of Elyria.
A spokeswoman for the state's prisons department declined to comment.
Inmates' weight has come up previously in death penalty cases in Ohio and elsewhere.
In 2008, federal courts rejected arguments by 19-stone condemned double-killer Richard Cooey that he was too obese to die by injection.
His lawyers argued that prison food and limited opportunities to exercise contributed to a weight problem that would make it difficult for the execution team to find a suitable vein.
He was executed later that year.
what do you think?

Michael Dynes
He was quite brave when he was murdering a woman. He's not so brave now is he?

Julie Crumpton
...they never are, Michael!

Emma Allum
So give him a double

Jasmin Louise
Hahaha good one :)

Julie Crumpton
Well, you make a good point Emma, do they not calculate how much is injected by weight anyway?

Tim Wells
Should get death by cheesecake

eastonandrea
LOL :-)

Emma Scott
What about the psychological pain felt by the family of the lady he killed? He didn't care about that when he shot an innocent person so why should anybody care about the feelings of a guilty man?

Katie Smith
How is he this weight when he's on death row? am I being a bit stupid? why can't they put him on a diet so he loses the weight? he's locked up isn't he? eat what's being put in front of you or don't eat at all! what's he being given? junk food or something? are they going out to get takeaways for him, if it was in this country then I could probably understand it but I didn't think it was all about the human rights of the criminal in the usa!.

Vanessa Lake
Absolutely! This is a bloody joke.

Stop feeding him.....simple.

Jasmin Louise
Sreve, he's already been executed! Good eh? :)

Julie Crumpton
...so why have you been voted down, jasmine? Pathetic!

Rob Shaw
So what if it is going to cause severe pain! At the end of the day, he's being put to DEATH for murdering someone. Very convenient that depression and all these things are preventing him from loosing weight to evetually be killed. It should in no way be peaceful experience for him. Let him suffer, fat greedy waste of space

Rob Hicks
shoot him then

t.bulgin
Yes, in the head, several times.

eastonandrea
I'm alittle confused at end of story it says "He was ex*cuted later that year", who was the 34 stone Ronald Post or the 19 stone Richard Cooney? As i think it states that Ronald is to be ex*cuted 16 Januaury. If he is still to be ex*cuted then they have 4 months in which to give him a crash diet to lower his weight to a reasonable size.

Jasmin Louise
Hi Andrea, I was having a blonde moment earlier lol. It's Post scheduled to be executed in January. Hope he over-eats at Christmas and has a heart attack!..........

eastonandrea
LOL Jasmin, save the expense of the lethal injection. Maybe stick him in boot camp and see how he can handle that, heart attack waiting to happen.

andy may
so what's his point? yes, i understand his claim that he may suffer a "torturous and lingering" death. so what, did the gluton show the same consideration when he killed an innocent hotel clerk?

MichaelStinton
Inhumane and before you say it two wrongs will not make it right.

Julie Crumpton
No...they don't, but don't you think he deserves to die?

Rob Shaw
Iv'e noticed someone has a problem with everyone about making him have the injections anyway, by down voting everyone's comments. Just wonder if they would like to come forward and have their say in his defence? Instead of hiding

Rob Shaw
.......Thought so

Julie Crumpton
People won't, aj....it annoys me too! So people are allowed to disagree,....but say WHY!!!

Jasmin Louise
A Jowett. Just ignore the voting down! They troll the site voting users down on anything from condolence messages to criminals receiving life sentences! Numpties Haha

Julie Crumpton
But why? Jasmine? If you feel strongly and disagree...fine! But what would be the point? I personally ignore it, but would like to hear why sometimes?

Ev Beard
Does he not realise we would all prefer if he did have a slow lingering death, so he could reflect on his crime.

El Bubsio
I have no desire to see that thanks. I guess I don't have the same bloodlust fuelled need for revenge that some people do.

Adj Jackson
Well if he's to fat to be executed then other means need to be found!!!! Errrrrrrrmmm errrrmmmm oh yes an Elephant Gun shuold do the trick

Julie Crumpton
Yep! That should do it!

TIM x
Not too fat to take an innocent life though were you?
Name witheld

"Ronald Post, who shot and killed a hotel clerk in northern Ohio almost 30 years ago, said his weight could lead to a "torturous and lingering death". And....your point?

Bryan Stocker
What is more bizzare than his lame excuse for non-execution is that he's being executed for a crime he commited when he was 23. I understand there needs to be time for the appeal process, but why keep him in prison for 30 years then execute him? Also, time moves on and so do attitudes and standards, if he committed the same crime today would he get the same sentence? If not then thats even worse.

Tracey Walker
I hope the belief that he will die a tortuous by injection is absolutely 100% true but the idea of watching him fry in an electric chair sounds fascinating either way a murdering piece of dirt leaves the life that he holds dear. Isnt that sad ?
