Delhi Gang Rape Suspect To Undergo Bone Tests

One of six suspects held over the gang rape and murder of a student in India is to undergo bone tests to determine whether he is old enough to answer for the crime.
Murder convictions carry the death penalty in India. However, only those aged 18 or more can be put on trial.
If the suspect is found to be underage, it is unclear whether he could still be tried for rape, which carries a life sentence.
The six males are jointly accused of raping and killing an unnamed 23-year-old woman on a bus in Delhi on December 16.
The victim was airlifted to Singapore for emergency treatment, but died on Saturday.
She was cremated in Delhi the next day. Her ashes were set to be submerged in the holy river Ganges near her home town in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, in accordance with Hindu customs.
Indians have been demanding the death penalty for those responsible, holding demonstrations almost every day since the attack.
Protesters and politicians from across the spectrum called for a special session of Parliament to pass new laws to increase punishments for rapists - including possible chemical castration - and to set up fast-track courts to deal with rape cases within 90 days.
Thousands of people have lit candles, held prayer meetings and marched through various cities and towns to express their grief, and to demand stronger protection for women and the death penalty for rape.
The protests continued on Tuesday, ahead of the first court appearance for the six suspects on Thursday.
Details of the charges run to more than 1,000 pages, according to reports, and some 30 witnesses are named in the prosecution's documents.
On Monday, the Indian army and navy cancelled their New Year's celebrations, as did Sonia Gandhi, the head of the ruling Indian National Congress party.
Several hotels and clubs across the capital also decided not to hold their usual parties.
what do you think?

Just hang him by his balls until he looks eighteen, then have him before the court. It's that easy.

So time in suspension will be very eye watering....

I'm struggling with this one. The cruelty of this act has sickened and appalled me, as it has touched so amny all oer the world. Initially, disgust and anger does make you wonder if they deserve death for their brutality. But when i think it through, i cannot accept the death penalty as the answer. I do not wish to erase more lives, but i do understand the disgust and anger

Vladtheinhaler .
You reap what you sow. The death penalty in this country over the past 40 years would have saved more lives than the alternative. Life is not the answer. Hang em high.

Maybe with the death penalty it would act aaa a deterrent to others who treat women as objects especially in places like India and Pakistan where these sort of attacks on women are common - and while we're on the subject wouldn't be a bad thing here either punishments to fit the crime

Kerry Carline
Im unsure where i stand on the death penalty.i dnt think that any1 has the right to take the life of another human being but at the same time crimes like this are so horendous that the only other fitting punishment apart from death is to have the same treatment they dished out only on a regular basis and time with the victims family.

Vladtheinhaler .
Oh, and Happy new year, all.

30 witnesses and this was still allowed to happen? (I think that makes sense)

shirley sutton
Yeah that's what I thought how could the driver and 30 witnesses drive around for an hour and do nothing - could have drove to a police station or stopped and raised the alarm instead they watched

Jennie Morris
Evil happens when good people do nothing

krafty81
Bet they'd have done something if the poor girl had been one of their relatives. I feel that these witnesses should stand trial for not doing anything to help but I know that won't be done

Mel Heatwole
Krafty, I'm not convinced they would have done anything even if they were relatives :(

krafty81
I think your right. :( so sad though.

If they do the crime they should do the time. Anything else gives those U18 to do what they like with impunity

Diane Rogers
Sounds bizarre, if they are old enough to do rhe crime they are old enough to do the time. Hang them

This case is abhorrent. As aforementioned if the deviant participated in this vile act then it being underage should be completely disregarded, just as the deviant disregarded his poor victim. I read another report about there being a curtain on the bus?? However this could not soundproof the attack and the 30 witnesses outnumbered each attacker 5:1. Yet no one intervened. Evil doers of this nature have no conscience and would strike again given the opportunity- so death is fitting. God only knows how many other victims the world over have endured the same suffering, gone unreported and unnoticed. Years ago, people in school talked about a young woman being gang-raped on a bus at night and no one came to her aid.

If he's old enough to join in he's old enough to answer for his crimes

Surely a birth certificate would determine how old he is?
