Monster moggie: diet for a too fat cat

An animal shelter has placed a 36-pound cat called Meatball with a clinic to help him lose weight.

The domestic shorthair, which should weigh about 12 pounds, was handed to the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control in Arizona by its owner earlier this week.

Melissa Gable at the shelter told Sky News: "The owner claims he was that fat when they got him six months ago. They say they gave him nothing but reduced calorie cat food.

"He may have a thyroid condition, but his weight is also most likely a factor of being fed too much human food."

Ms Gable said despite being in animal welfare for 15 years, she'd "never seen a cat this large".

The four-year-old is only able to take a few steps at a time before he needs to lie down.

Meatball will now be put on a weight loss diet at the Companion Pet Clinic and be allowed to roam freely in the hope that he'll get the exercise he needs.

Once he is fit and healthy he will be put up for adoption.
