Dropped Coffee Cup Leads To Rape Arrest
A man has been arrested after a discarded coffee cup linked him to two serious sexual assaults.
The paper Starbucks cup fell out of the alleged attacker's car into a car park on February 19 as the female victim managed to escape.
The cup had a sticker with coffee information on it that revealed it had been bought at a drive-through outlet in DuPont, Washington, earlier that day.
Police analysed CCTV footage and arrested 35-year-old Bryon E. Johnston on Tuesday.
A judge found probable cause to hold Johnston in jail on one count of first-degree rape, one count of attempted first-degree rape and two counts of first-degree kidnapping over the February attack and a similar attack in November when another woman was abducted from a bus stop in Olympia.
He has been held on $250,000 bail at Thurston County Jail.
Paul Strophy, Johnston's defence attorney, declined to comment.
The woman attacked in February said as she escaped from the vehicle she noticed several items falling to the ground from the open door, The Olympian reported.
She later pointed these items out to police as they investigated the scene in a car park at an abandoned motor inn.
